This week I am attempting to write a chapter on the trails and tribulations of childhood for a evolutionary parenting handbook. I am starting with this quote by dawkins that I absolutely love.

We are going to die, and that makes us the lucky ones. Most people are never going to die because they are never going to be born. The potential people who could have been here in my place but who will in fact never see the light of day outnumber the sand grains of
Arabia. Certainly those unborn ghosts include greater poets than Keats, scientists greater than Newton. We know this because the set of possible people allowed by our DNA so massively exceeds the set of actual people. In the teeth of these stupefying odds it is you and I, in our ordinariness, that are here.

– Richard Dawkins (Unweaving the rainbow: science, delusion, and      a                                   appetitie for wonder.)

Maybe this is for the best.

I have always liked this quote by Douglas Adams:

"One of the many major problems with governing people is that of whom you get to do it; or rather of who manages to get people to let them do it to them. To summarize: it is a well known fact, that those people who most want to rule people are, ipso facto, those least suited to do it. To summarize the summary: anyone who is capable of getting themselves made president should on no account be allowed to do the job. To summarize the summary of the summary: people are a problem."

-Hitchhikers Guide to the Galaxy.

No one ever had a better command of the english language than Douglas Adams.

I doubt anyone ever will.

To rebel against being born a woman seemed as foolish to her as to take pride in it.

Oh, and some Melville

There are certain queer times and occasions in this strange mixed affair we call life when a man takes this whole universe for a vast practical joke, though the wit thereof he but dimly discerns, and more than suspects that the joke is at nobody's expense but his own.

new favorite quote:
Isaiah 1:14

Your New Moon festivals and your appointed feasts
my soul hates.
They have become a burden to me;
I am weary of bearing them.

"fuck it, i'll do it live"
and
"we're professionally done" are also big hits with me.

I stand by this man because he stands for things. Not only for things, he stands on things. Things like aircraft carriers, and rubble, and recently flooded city squares. And that sends a strong message, that no matter what happens to America, she will always rebound with the most powerfully staged photo ops in the world. - Stephen Colbert [on George W. Bush]
