I think thats a silly statement. The purpose of landing on the moon was to test if we had the technology to visit another body. Visiting another body included so many variables that until we tested our theories we wernt sure it was going to work. now so much of what we learned seems obvious, but back then we didnt know shit.
The purpose of creating this laser is to test if we have the capability to harness fusion on Earth. That is a far more meaningful test, as far as humanity is concerned. Mind you the Apollo project ended up costing a little more than $25 billion (as reported to congress in 1973), compared to this "limitless energy" project which has only consumed $2 billion thus far. In my opinion, even if this project exceed the Apollo budget, it's well worth it. $25 billion is less than ~0.3% of the US FY budget. Spread that over a decade or two and well, damn, that's hardly anything.
