With that said I understand people's natural tendency to admire high status individuals within their group. This trait is not unique to humans. Take chimps, for example, it would be in their best interest to follow the lead alpha males and females within his clan. A chimp needs to know certain things like who can it take food from, who it has to share or give up my food to, who is a potential mate, etc. So it would always be in their best interest to pay close attention to who is dominant in the group. Take this long existing feature in our current environment complete with movie stars, tabloids, and the internet and "its outta control, it can do what it want to". The media feeds it to us because they know we will devour ourselves in it.

Do I think just because it’s evolved that it’s right, absolutely not.
