How Video Games Got The 60$ Price Tag

David Thomas at CrispyGamer.com writes an excellent article that explores the cost of video games from an economic and quality perspective. He makes an excellent comparison to the movie industry as to why prices go up and suggests and explains reasons why the increases might occur.

While all his points hold water, I think he hits the nail on the head when he says

That's right, Joe Gamer, it's entirely possible that games cost $60 because some executive, at some point, thought it would be funny to raise the average price of a game by $10 and no one complained. And we kept lining up at the game store with three twenties and a sock of loose change for sales tax.

I totally agree with this. When games were 30 - 40 dollars, I bought more of them the time = value of the game wasn't as much of a concern when buying a game wasn't breaking the bank. Now that they are so expensive, I don't buy a game till I hear many reviews and / or play the demos.

It used to be that you get what you pay for. These days, you pay whatever you pay for whatever you get.
